A Letter to my Disgruntled Home

Dearest Home,

I hear what you’re saying. You’re not happy. I get it, and I'm sorry. Ever since I obsessively took up writing again, you slipped down the totem pole of priorities. It’s not that I don’t think you’re important. You’re awesome, and I feel horrible about the way things have piled up. But it’s been crazy lately, you know? It seems that my best is not enough, and we’re all lucky if anything gets done at all around here.
While we’re being honest with one another, I should tell you that I know all about how you and my husband sat around having drinks together while I was away, debating which one of you is most neglected by me. Nice. Oh, and I see you invited the neighborhood ants into our kitchen. I thought you were classier than that.
Look, we can’t go on this way. I don’t want any hard feelings, and I miss how we used to enjoy each other’s company. Things have changed—that’s life, and I know you don’t want to hear it, but my writing is here to stay. We’re in a busy season, especially with potty training and summer activities, but once school starts back we can spend a little more time together. I can’t promise it will be like it once was, but I truly believe it will all be worth it. You know those shiny new hardwood floors you’ve been eyeballing? Eh? That’s right. J I’m thinking of you, even if my mind is so preoccupied that I don’t show it much these days.
I appreciate you. Did you know a lot of writers have to leave their homes to concentrate, while I write best when I’m snuggled in your shelter? See, you’re a comfort to me.
I’m glad we had this talk. Let’s just try to relax this summer. Please don’t get your basement in a twist when things are hectic. I have a wonderful feeling that it’ll all work out in the end.

Yours Truly,
Wendy

  1. You and me both! It's so hard to keep up with it all, especially in the summer time! My oldest goes back to school on the 10th and things will get a little less hectic for me then.

  2. My kids don't go back until after Labor Day in September. Ugh! It's impossible to keep up with everything in the summer. I miss my writing time!

  3. We're remodeling my house, so everything has been a total mess all year! Thankfully, we're going to be done soon so maybe things will get cleaner soon.

My brother and I don't go back to school till after Labor Day too, but I think my mom enjoys having us home because then we can clean everything for her.

  4. Peony, you're a sweet thing for helping your mom!!! Mine are only 5 and 2, so I can't expect too much from them, yet, lol. :)

  5. Oh yeah... that's me. Pile on a summer with decent weather, and my house is a DISASTER :D

  6. Sunday mornings (now) are dedicated housecleaning time for me. It doesn't always happen, but I try to do at least a quick whip around with the vaccuum, if nothing else. Otherwise all week when I'm doing other things (writing) the piles of dust and crumbs nag at me...

  7. Kate, I can only go a week without vacumming too, because it drives me crazy when I start to see little piles of dog hair in the corners! Ew!

  8. You know, my husband can always guess if I had a crappy writing day. He'll say, "Wow! The house is super clean! I'm guessing you didn't hit your goal?" Haha! I clean when I get stuck, and sometimes it feels so good to be productively cleaning, I just don't get back to the real work. I would much prefer an untidy house and a solid couple of chapters!

  9. I'm with you on that last line, Elizabeth! But the worst is when you're so crazy busy during the summer or holidays that the house and writing both suffer! Ugh.

  10. I love this post. I ask myself everyday after I come home from work: Okay, laundry that's piling up and needs to be folded or write. Oh, well, they take turns. LOL
