American Horror Story anyone?

Okay, so it's not strictly writing or reading related, but sometimes we all need a break from that, don't we? And what better way to take a break than discussing my new favourite TV show.

There are ways to tie in this TV show with writing and reading. For example, the writers of this show are very talented. They know how to throw twists at you. How to get readers to practically salivate with need for the next episode. To sit there and be simultaneously shocked and enthralled with what's happening. To unfold the larger picture bit by bit.

I have to say, this show fascinates me. For me, it's the love/hate feeling I have towards the characters. Ben, the father. He's a cheating douche. He has some seriously messed up desires, and yet you can tell he genuinely loves his family. Violet is an angsty teenager but I wouldn't know what to do in her position either. And Tate. Tate, Tate, Tate. He's one sick, messed up individual, and yet...I love him.

If there was a book like this, I'd be all over it. The twists, the relationship between characters, the morbid scenes and creepy ghosts. Love, love, love.

So have you been watching? Do you love it too? I'd love to get a conversation going about it in the comments!

  1. I have the biggest crush on Tate. I'm totally in love with this show, too, and I agree--the writers are doing a fantastic job. Cannot WAIT for the season finale!

This is one of two TV shows I keep up with every week. The other one being The Walking Dead.

  2. I have a weird crush on him too. He's such a good little actor. His scenes with Violet in the last episode were wonderfully emotional.

  3. I've been watching! It's definitely among the best shows of 2011. I haven't been too shocked by the twists, but with every turn I'm trying to guess what happens next (It has even started a fight among me and my boyfriend lol). But I have to say the Halloween episode was the best. It really and truly upset me on a deeper level than any other show and yet, like you, I think I love Tate. Like a lot. lol so I completely agree. Great show due to great writing (and acting but thats another story)

  4. I'm soooo obsessed with this show! Another thing I love about it is that, in spite of it having an on-going storyline (as opposed to a very episodic structure), TONS of stuff happens in EVERY episode. They through a gazillion new things at you every week--there's no "filler" (at least not yet).

But you're right--I don't particularly LIKE any of the characters, but I'm completely enthralled by them and invested in their stories :)

  5. Yes! This is another thing I love about the show. Not only its capability to make me want to strangle a character and then hug them (Tate haha), but because it's one huge story line and I love how it's all unfolding!

I did love the Halloween episode, but I don't think I have a favourite, per say. All I know is that I did not see the thing about Violet coming. Stupid me.

  6. I haven't heard of this show, but I'm guessing thst's cos I don't live in the US, but its sounds very intriguing. I'm a scaredy cat, but I like my dose of horror.
I'm gonna look for available versions of this show.

  7. Normally I don't watch a lot of horror, but this ones got me hooked. I watch it on catch up on my computer with my head phones on. I think that makes it even scarier. I jumped like crazy at the microwave scene.

  9. Bee, I watch it online. I live in the UK, and we have it over here, but not as fast as in the US. Try and stream it if you can't watch on TV.

  11. Oh, the microwave scene! That was crazy. I don't think I have a crush on Tate, but it's definitely hard not to watch him. He's a scene stealer is what he is!

  12. This show is totally crazy and creepy...but in a good way. I love this show. Its so bold and just goes for it and thankfully its not bad enough to be on HBO. Then I would be mad because I don't have that channel. All the characters are crazy but you gotta love them. I have my sights on Ben he just oh so hott. I don't love his character very much but at least he tries his best to make up for everything. I'm so glad I recorded this show because its awesome.

  13. I love this show, I watch it online. The writing is great, it takes elements from different stories/movies, and makes them come alive in new and sometimes painful to watch ways. I'm thrilled there are so many who enjoy it as I do. It takes a basic premise- family/adultery/forgiveness, and blows it all to hell. I agree, if it were a book, it would be one I'd read at least once per year.

  14. Agree with all of you. There's still questions I have, but I'm hoping they'll be answered eventually. Like, how comes only certain ghosts can be seen all the time and not others? Do they choose when they are seen? If they can be seen all the time, why not be seen all the time? You know?

  15. I haven't seen this but I've been hearing amazing things about the writers for it. I've GOT to check it out! Thanks for the reminder. :)

  16. I'm in the UK and I think this is on a channel I can't get. I feel I'm missing out on something good...

  17. I tried to watch this show, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't produced in HBO's usual FLOOD IT WITH SEX!!! style. They do a great job incorporating it into their plot, but overdose of the subject has always been a pretty instant turn-off for me.

  18. Loooove it. Murphy's quickly becoming one of my new fave writers. The reveal of this show is great, like clues and the answer is staring you in the face as a viewer, but when it all comes out it's still satisfying. Yes, good writing. Good characterization.
