The Tuesday Twaddle - Dr Scholls V Louboutins

Beautiful cover
Another beauty
Do you judge a book by its cover?  I know you’re not supposed to, but I totally do.  In fact, a beautiful cover will entice me to buy a book even if I know it’s going to be four hundred pages of complete crap.  But I just can’t help myself.  Let’s just call it a weakness.  I like to buy books and put them on my shelves.  I don’t even have to read them.  I just like to know that they’re there, like pieces of art that I pop in and admire every now and again.
I can draw a parallel with shoes (stay with me here, I swear… I have a point).  I love shoes.  Six inch heal Christian Louboutins make me drool.  Do I buy them? Hell yeah! Do I wear them? Gah! No.  They are sooo uncomfortable, hell to walk in, and you’d completely wreck the beautiful red soles on them.  My point being, it’s okay to buy a book for its cover, like a shoe for its sole, or a painting for its colors.  We do what makes us happy.

UMMMM!

UGH!

But if you put an amazing book in a horrendous cover, I'm not really going to be tempted, that would be like telling me to buy a pair of Dr. Scholls shoes because they're comfy, it's just not happening.  Finding an amazing book with an brilliant cover is like finding that illusive pair of six inch sparkly heals that are as comfortable to walk in as slippers.

While I've found books that meet both requirements, the perfect shoe still evades me.  Now, name a book that you bought purely for the cover! Did you read it? Was it any good? Be honest.

  1. I have to say, I'm a huge fan of beautiful covers. It does draw me to a book. But a lot of the time, I buy books based on reviews and blurbs now.

  2. Yeah, I definitely judge. But, you know how when you meet a beautiful person but they're just so rude you can't stand to be in the same room as them? That's how I get with beautiful covers that have poorly written stories/ terrible plot/ sucky characters inside.

  3. I've always judged books by their covers. I know this is the dumbest thing to have a preference for, but I can't stand super shiny covers! Especially with a mostly black backdrop to the cover, it just looks cheesy.

HER AND ME AND YOU by Lauren Strasnick. It's a beautiful night time snowy walk with an umbrella, and it's absolutely perfect. It was also a fantastic book, fyi!

  4. Last year I bought Hush, Hush just because of the cover and ended up LOVING it.

This year, I bought another book that ended up being really popular. Still, to this day it has one of the most gorgeous covers I've ever seen, but I HATED the book. I couldn't even finish it which I don't do often. Sad... Loved the cover.

  5. I'm the same as Meagan. Sometimes I'll pick up a so-so looking book, but that's only because I've read all the pretty covered books before.

NIGHTSHADE by Andrea Cremer is one that attracted me because of the cover. I ended up liking the book despite how disappointed I am that Calla chose Shay (Ren's bad boy but sweet). I'll definitely be looking out for the next book WOLFSBANE!

On the other end, BEFORE I FALL doesn't have the best looking cover, but it suits the story. I heard good reviews about it, and the title attracted me. The story is one of my favorites of 2010!

  6. I judge, and I've been burned because of it.
On the flip side, there are covers that look so incredibly boring to me, like the book GONE with people just standing there looking at the camera - but supposedly it's a super good read. I'm trying to put aside my cover snobbery. :)

  7. The ONE thing I dislike about my kindle is the lack of beautiful covers.
I'm five pages into a book that I purchased simply because of the beautifully painted blue toenails on the cover. I'll let you know how it turns out.

  8. Sigh - oh those shoes! Look for Bitter Sweet shoes, comfort and style.

Oh sorry, we were talking about book covers =P

I don't buy many books by their cover, I usually read the blurb to decide. Across the Universe did drag me in by it's cover and it ROCKED!
