Patterns

So sorry I'm late today! Had a busy weekend and spaced my post!

I've always been a name person. I love picking names for the characters in my books. While talking names with DJ the other day, I realized something else about myself--I tend to stick to certain letters as well. It took me sitting down and thinking of all my character names to see that I really need to pay more attention to what I'm doing. LOL. I'm not going to tell you ALL the names, just the ones that start with the same letter. These are in finished books and partial WIPs. Oh and they're all main characters too.

For girls I have:
Abby, Arianna, Annabel, Tori, Camryn, Aspen, Tate

Boys:
Tegan, Tanner, Caleb, Travis, Cody, Carter

And that's only what I can think of off the top of my head. I have other partial books as well. Apparently I like A's, C's, and T's. LOL

Do your names tend to start with the same letter? Is there any other quirks or patterns you've noticed about your writing.

  1. Ooh, yeah! I have the same problem. I tend to drift toward names with J's and D's. I also accidentally pick names that rhyme such as Jaiden and Hayden :/ Fail! Lol.

  2. I try hard to pick different letters. My problem is the names rhyming or sounding the same. One of my original character names was: Harlyn but other MC was Ronin...so I changed Harlyn to Ivy. Still going to use Harlyn though....just in another book - lol!

  3. Kelley, I often find myself drifting to using names that start with the same letter, even though I don't want to confuse the reader. I just save the others for future books!

  4. I can totally relate to this. I've had four major WIPs and two of my female MCs names start with C (Chloe & Colby) and the other two start with S (Sophia & Scarlett)

With my boys--two of them start with J (Jake and James.) But what I notice is that I seem to have the whole one syllable thing going on with all my guys. The other two are Max and Nate...

  5. Mmhmm...the two hotties in my story are Kaidan and Kopano. LOL!

  6. I like "B" and "S" names. I have to check my characters to make sure I haven't added too many. I'm glad I'm not the only one with an affinity to specific letters of the alphabet.

  7. I tend to go with the J names--Josh; Jacob; Jessica. But perhaps I need to break free of that pattern.

  8. Actually, I've heard there's something positive about using names beginning with 'A'. :) Supposedly, it helps set high standards, and people whose name starts with 'A' tend to do well. But who knows how much truth rings in that? Personally, I love names that start with 'A', 'K', and 'S', though I'm not sure why.

  10. I always gravitate to boys' names starting with J. I have to fight to get way from Jeremy, Jake, Jason. But since my characters almost always come to me with names, sometimes it's hard to change them later....

But my new book seems entirely devoid of J boys... Dylan, Sam, Eddie, Oh no! Jesse and Jason... Oooppps!

  11. Now there are two writers who have a boy named Tegan in their books -.-

I really don't have a pattern with my names. Evangelista, Izzy, Blane, Corinna, Vianna, Sam, Evett...but I do like unique names.
