Weather-Related and Seasonal Reading Giveaway

This time of year makes me hunger for spooky reading. Something dark and dangerous and mysterious. When it comes to YA literature, I definitely get that feeling from a good dystopian novel.
I don't know how the weather's been where you live, but here on the central east coast it's been dreary. Rain, overcast skies, and darkened rooms, even during the day. It's spooky reading weather at its best, with chilly hints of autumn in the air. I'm in the mood to share this feeling. How about a book giveaway?  :)

There are two brand new, hardback, dytopian books up for grabs and I'll choose a winner for each!

Here's what you need to do:
~ Be a follower of this blog
~ In a comment, tell me which book you'd prefer (if you have a preference)
~ Provide an email address where I can contact you (if you're not comfortable putting your email address online, you can send it to me at wendyhigginswrites@gmail.com)
~ Also in your comment, tell us what spooky, dark stories you recommend :)
I'll accept entries for one week. Contest will end at midnight Friday, September 30th. Winner will be chosen at random and announced Sunday, October 2nd.
Thanks everyone!  ~Wendy

  10. Oh I would love to read Blood Red Road. I recommend for seasonal, the Kate Daniels series since with all of the shifters it is a bit like a costumed Halloween.

I haven't read very spooky stories lately, but I've heard that Anna Dressed in Blood is fantastic (A book that I desperately want. Haha.), and there is the Curse Workers series by Holly Black. Personally, I find that spooky.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth might be good, but The Harrowing by Alexandra Sokoloff is probably better defined as "spooky" =]

  15. I just finished Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, which had a dark feel. It even has old pictures throughout, which are incredibly creepy and add a definite spooky factor to the story.

    OR

NAME OF THE STAR by Maureen Johnson. It's not out yet, but the first 78 pages are available to read.

As far as spooky stories go, I haven't read that much YA spooky books lately - but for adult: House of Leaves (not for the faint of heart) and The Vanishing by Tim Krabbe (easier read, but also a very creep-tastic ending). Sorry I don't have and YA recommendations at this time.

    Will e-mail you my e-mail.

My spooky book rec would be Possess by Gretchen McNeil.

As for spooky--I'd recommend The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff. It's dark and strange, and the MC has a wonderfully sweet and genuine voice.

  29. Hi Wendy,
The sun's shining here in Sydney, Aus at the moment so it's not exactly the sort of weather that creates a spooky atmosphere. Still, if I close all the curtains and play a John Carpenter soundtrack in the background I can trick myself into thinking it's Halloween. As egotistical as it is, my spooky book recommendation would have to be my own - Winter's Shadow. Guaranteed to give even the bravest YA paranormal reader the creeps or your money back.

  30. mjhearle, LOL! It's all about creating the mood. Thanks for letting us know about Winter's Shadow.

And thanks everyone who entered this weekend! I'll see you next weekend. :) Happy creepy reading!

  33. Thanks for this contest, Wendy! I'd love to win Blood Red Road, since I already have two copies of Delirium. :)

Any spooky, dark stories? You know, I really can't think of any off the top of my head, which is sad b/c those are precisely the sort of stories that I love to read. I'm really excited for the upcoming releases of The Death Cure and Variant, though.
